THE ENAMELED LAVA STONE

Dan Sabatay

In each of Dan Sabatay’s works we are to find his drive for enameling lava, for carefully researching matter, texture and depth, for light and for colour.

Dan Sabatay created, within his body of work, monumental pieces in Volvic lava, mostly enameled in his studio in Le Vésinet (Yvelines France).

When working on public commissions, he often collaborated with other artists: examples include the painter Léon Ghishia with whom he created the two frescos that frame

the main entrance to the Faculty of Science at the University of Paris, Jussieu (1970- 1971), the painter Pierre Wemaëre, who he worked with to create a fresco for the Collège de Montigny in Ostrevent (1975) as well as an indoor frieze for the Collège de la Durantière in Nantes (1974); he also engaged in several collaborations with Violette D’ Auriol (1975-1977) . In 1980, he completed, this time on his own, six small frescos and five friezes for the Lycée Technique de Bois (of Woodwork) of Saulxure en Moselotte.

Why lava stone ?

“As a frost-free and non-porous stone, glued or stapled lava can be employed for indoor or outdoor works. It is possible to cut lava stone to any dimension, with depths of between 15 and 30 mm. Without altering its form, lava also resists heat of up to 1000 ° Celcius.”

Why enamel ?

“An infinite range of colours is at the ceramicist’s disposal when working up to a temperature of 960 celcius. The artist’s potential for expressive richness here lies in the play of matt and shiny enamels and on the layering of colours and successive burnouts.”
Dan Sabatay
